Elbow Sleeves for Weightlifting: 5mm vs 7mm, Sizing, and What They Cost

Elbow sleeves are the least-explained piece of lifting equipment. Most of what gets written about them is written for a completely different buyer, and the search results will happily hand you a brace built for something that has nothing to do with a barbell.
This page is only about the lifting kind: neoprene sleeves worn for heavy pressing. What thickness does, how to size them, and what the market charges.
The short version
- A lifting elbow sleeve gives you warmth, compression, and joint support under load. That's it. It is not a brace and it is not medical equipment.
- 7mm is more support and more warmth. 5mm is lighter and moves more freely.
- Verified July 2026, comparable pairs run $39.99 to $80.00. Ours is $45 for a 7mm pair.
What elbow sleeves are for
Heavy pressing. Bench, overhead press, and the high-volume triceps work that piles up behind both.
The neoprene does two things. It holds heat in the joint, which matters more than people expect on a long pressing session in a cold gym. And it applies compression, which gives you a clearer sense of where the joint is under load. Most lifters who use them describe it as the elbow feeling more organised on heavy sets.
They are not required equipment. If your pressing feels fine, you don't need sleeves. They earn their place when the volume goes up or the bar does.
One thing they are not: these are training equipment, not medical devices. If something in your elbow hurts, that's a question for a medical professional, not a neoprene sleeve and not me.
5mm or 7mm
7mm gives you more. More warmth, more compression, more support at the bottom of a press. It's the thicker material and it behaves like it. The trade is bulk, and this is where elbow sleeves differ from knee sleeves in a way nobody mentions.
A uniform 7mm sleeve bunches at the crux of the elbow at the bottom of a press. The material has nowhere to go, and you feel it resist right where you don't want resistance. Ours is thinned at the crux specifically to deal with that, so you get 7mm support without the sleeve fighting the bottom position. That was a construction decision made because the uniform version was worse to press in.
5mm is lighter and less intrusive. Better if you want warmth and light compression across varied training rather than maximum support on heavy pressing days.
We make 7mm. If you want minimum bulk, 5mm from someone else is a reasonable buy and I'd rather say that than pretend the thicker one is right for everybody.

Watch the "sold as" column. Rehband's $39.99 is one sleeve. That's not a criticism, it's how they sell them and it suits people who only want one. It does mean the headline price isn't comparing like with like against a pair, and it's the single most common way people misread this category.
On pairs, we're the cheapest 7mm in that set. SBD's is a dual-density build, 7mm on the outer panel and 5mm on the inner, which is a genuinely different design and not something we're claiming to match.
How to size elbow sleeves
Measure the circumference of your arm across the elbow joint with the arm relaxed and straight. That number is the one that matters, not your shirt size and not your knee sleeve size.
Ours run XX-Small (22 to 24 cm) through XXX-Large (36 to 38 cm), eight sizes. They should be snug. A sleeve that slides down your forearm mid-set isn't supporting anything.
Same sizing method for men and women. Arm circumference varies more between individuals than between genders, so measure and pick the number.
The smaller version: compression cuffs
If you want compression on a specific spot without a full sleeve's coverage, we make a compression cuff at $16. Same 7mm neoprene, much smaller profile, 8 through 14 inches. It works on elbows, on knees, wherever you want targeted compression and less bulk.
It's the right call if you already know exactly where you want the compression. If you're not sure, buy the full sleeve.
Common questions
Should I get 5mm or 7mm elbow sleeves? 7mm for maximum warmth and support on heavy pressing. 5mm for less bulk across more varied training. We make 7mm, thinned at the elbow crux so it doesn't bind at the bottom of a press.
How should elbow sleeves fit? Snug. Measure around the elbow joint with your arm relaxed and straight, then match the size range. If the sleeve migrates down your forearm during a set, it's too big.
Are elbow sleeves and elbow wraps the same thing? No. A sleeve is a fixed-size neoprene tube you pull on. A wrap is wound and tensioned each time. Sleeves are for warmth and consistent compression across a session; wraps are for maximum tension on a specific heavy set.
Are elbow sleeves competition legal? Rules vary by federation and by lift, and elbow sleeves are restricted or banned in more places than knee sleeves are. Worth saying plainly: Stoic belts, knee sleeves, wrist wraps, and singlets are permitted for IPF-sanctioned competition through 31 December 2026 (Stoic was removed from the IPF's Approved List in January 2026, so this is legal-through-a-date, not current approval). Elbow sleeves and compression cuffs were never on that list at all, at any point. Check your federation's current equipment list before a meet, whatever brand you buy.
What happens if a sleeve fails? Manufacturing defects are covered for one year from purchase, including seam separation and neoprene delamination. See the warranty page. That's separate from the 30-day return policy.
Do I need elbow sleeves for squats? No. That's what knee sleeves are for. Elbow sleeves are pressing equipment.
Can I wear them all session? You can, and most lifters take them off for warm-ups and put them on when the weight gets real. Neither is wrong.
